3 Important Squarespace SEO Tips

We discussed in a recent post, Squarespace SEO Help for Beginners, about how SEO is a long game and not something you should expect to see results from immediately. That said, there are a handful of simple, yet important tips you can follow to increase your Squarespace website SEO ranking in short order.

Here are 3 important Squarespace SEO tips you should follow.

1. Start a blog

Starting a blog is one of the easiest ways to increase your chances of showing up higher in Google search. Every Squarespace template comes with the ability to easily add a blog. Each time you write a new blog post you benefit in a few keys areas:

  • Each published post becomes its own page, with its own unique URL. This means more of your web pages are indexed by Google, increasing the likelihood that you will show search authority over search terms in your industry. More pages are a good thing. But remember the content *must* be good.

  • Blog posts give you a chance to establish yourself as an expert in your industry. If you’re writing a blog post chances are the content of the post is going to be related (directly or indirectly) to your industry. Say you run a local property management company. Write a blog post about upcoming projects, awards you’ve won, or even your favorite local restaurants. This provides you with an opportunity to write engaging content containing keywords that your potential customers may use when searching. Not only do you grow your brand, but you continue to provide Google with a reason to rank your website higher.

  • Blog posts are social and can easily be shared by others. Having others share your blog posts is a sure fire way to increase traffic and engagement on your website. When a blog post is shared it creates a ‘backlink’. Backlinks are links to your content from another website (more on that later). Using the example above, if we run a property management company and write a blog post about our favorite local developers, we may get those developers to share our blog post with their users. They may even add a link to that blog post to their own website. All of this is tracked by Google and increasingly important for boosting your search ranking.

2. Write like a human

Writing is tough. I’m by no means an expert. But when it comes to SEO the best thing you can do is write like a human. As we all know, Google is smart. And it’s getting better at detecting bad content every day. When writing your meta descriptions, on page content, blog posts etc. do your best to write like a conversational human. Sure, pepper in important keywords when you can. But be natural! If you overuse keywords, have repetitive content, or write like a machine, it is only a matter of time before it negatively impacts your search ranking.

3. Generate trustworthy backlinks

Google loves if other trustworthy websites link to your content. Each time another website links to content hosted on your site (a page, blog post) it is considered a ‘backlink’. Backlinks are tracked by Google and help you to establish a higher ranking so long as the links are coming from trustworthy websites. The trick is getting others to link your content. And the best way to do this is to create high quality content, like we discussed earlier. If other high ranking websites are generating backlinks for your website, you’ll be climbing the search rankings in no time.
